RealPlayer is a shareware plug-in which lets you listen to real audio files (*.ram). Unfortunately the sound quality is not always so great and the files can't be saved to a computer so easily. Nevertheless the streaming radio and video (!) comes in quick enough to make this the medium of choice for web radio and video activists.
Winamp
is the most commonly used free mp3 player. It can be customized,
can convert from mp3 to wav (allowing you to record your mp3s on a CD
to play in your regular CD player), and play wav files as well. I find
most of the less basic options to be difficult to find, and the interface
to be less than intuitive, but what do I know? The basic stuff is simple
enough, and thats what counts!
